Protecting real wood floors from water damage

January 5th, 2012

Q: I have just installed a solid oak stained and lacquered floor. What product should I use on it to make it waterproof and protect it for the future?

A: As you have chosen a lacquered finish for your floor you have already taken one step towards protecting your floor and there will certainly be an element of water repelling as well. However real wood flooring is a natural product and the timber will absorb liquid it comes in to contact with, which would damage the floor. There are products on the market which claim to enhance protection against water but, without extensive testing, I am unable to recommend any of these products I'm afraid.
