Laying it out
September 14th, 2010
Q: We are purchasing a new tiled lino floor and have been advised that we need to install the tiles by working from the centre of the room. How do we establish this spot?
A: The advice you have been given is correct and of course you will also need to know what the total area of the room is to make sure you have the right number of tiles. Always have some extra just in case you need spares. The simple way to find the centre of the room is to measure the length of each wall and mark the point halfway along it. Then use chalk or pencil to mark a line from one side to the other between the halfway points. Do this for all four sides and the point in the middle where the lines cross is the centre. When laying tiles, don't forget to take your time and stick them down one at a time, making sure it is in position correctly before moving on to the next one.
