Campaign to end child labour in rug industry
Child labour is a part of the hand-made rug market is being combated by an organisation which is quickly attracting new members.
The GoodWeave certification programme hopes to eradicate child labour in the sector by licensing North American importers who do not use children to make their rugs.
There are now ninety members within the U.S. organisation which have all committed to a supply chain which does not involve child labour at any point.
The use of children in the handmade rug market is not an element that many within the industry wish to talk about, or even acknowledge.
Although there are plenty of suppliers with scrupulous principles and supply chains there are also those companies which do use child labour.
The GoodWeave organisation is hoping to highlight those businesses which do take advantage so that consumers can buy from the reputable suppliers.
