Width
Width is the extent from side to side. It refers to the breadth or wideness. Most common flooring widths range from 90mm to 200mm planks.
Length
Length is the longest extent of a board, measured from end to end. Laminates are standard in length depending on the specific brand or range lengths are usuall between 1200mm & 1600mm with each range being the same length. Engineered floors are also usually all the same length ranging from 1200mm to 2200mm. Solid floors are different with most being available in random lengths, or anywhere between 300mm to 1800mm.
Thickness
This refers to the total thickness of the floor. Lamiante are usually between 7mm and 9.5mm in thickness with solid and engineered flooring ranging from 14mm upto 22mm
Wear Layer
The term “wear layer” refers to the top portion of a plank of hardwood flooring. Wear layer thickness becomes very important when considering the number of times a product can be refinished. On solid hardwood floors this is normally the amount of product before reaching the tongue of the plank, usually 6mm thick.
Wear layer is a more important consideration on engineered hardwood flooring. For an engineered product, the wear layer is only as thick as the species layer on the product. Most manufacturers produce engineered products with enough wear layer to allow for one or more refinishes. Generally speaking, the thicker a wear layer is on an engineered product, the higher quality the product is. Wear layers on engineered floors range from 2mm to 6mm
