If you have a pet urinate on your wood floor, you need to clean it up as soon as possible with water and a disinfectant spray to keep it from seeping into the wood. If the urine has seeped into the wood, youll need to follow these steps to get rid of the stain and odor.
Step One: Strip the finish off the stained part of the floor and sand it down. If youre feeling up to it, you can strip and sand the entire floor. Sometimes this is the better way to handle it, to ensure a completely uniform look.
Step Two: Create a cleaning solution to remove the stain. This solution should contain 1 tablespoon of oxalic acid for every cup of hot water. Use 1 cup and 1 tablespoon for each stain to ensure they get enough mixture to properly treat them.
Step Three: Pour the mixture on the stain, liberally. Its not going to work effectively if you use it sparingly.
Step Four: Allow the mixture to sit on the stain overnight. If you cant wait that long, at least 6 hours is good enough.
Step Five: Wipe the mixture away from the wood with warm water and a cloth. The stain should be gone at this point, and if not, it should be less visible.
If you are not happy with the results, you can repeat these steps with another mixture and soak. Bigger stains may require repeat applications, but eventually the stain will disappear.
Step Six: Reseal the wood with a finish.
