When installing carpet on your own, you have to know how to stretch the carpet. If you dont stretch the carpet properly, you will end up with waves or wrinkles. Here are some instructions to show you how to stretch a carpet.
Step 1: Get Your Materials: To stretch a carpet, you need a power carpet stretcher and a knee kicker. Read the instruction manual to familiarize yourself with them.
Step 2: Determine Which Direction You Need to Stretch In: Different situations call for different stretching methods. In some cases, a carpet must be stretched in only one direction while it needs to be stretched in opposite directions in other cases. There are even instances where it has to be stretched out from the center.
Step 3: Roll Out the Carpet: Roll out the carpet you have purchased. Do this before anything else to make sure you have the right amount. Its best to have about an inch of extra carpeting on all sides so it spans along the walls and borders of the desired space.
Step 4: Attach the Carpet to a Tack Strip: In the corner of the room, there needs to be a tack strip set up. Put the toothed end of the knee kicker three inches from the wall in front of that strip. Putting your knee into the padded end of the knee kicker will make the carpet move forward, firmly attaching it to the tack strip. Pull gently to test it out.
Step 5: Place The Stretcher: Use an automated stretcher to stretch the opposite side of your carpeting. Place the stretcher on one end, against the wall where you attached the carpet with the knee kicker. The end with teeth needs to be six inches from the wall directly across the attached carpet. Adjust anything necessary to extend that far.
Step 6: Activate The Stretcher: Activate the stretchers lever to stretch and push the carpet over the tack strips waiting on the opposite wall. Attach a section using the knee kicker and stretcher.
Step 7: Trim Excess Carpet: You may end up with excess carpeting. To avoid bubbling, simply trim the edges off. Keep doing this as you attach the carpet to tack strips.
Step 8: Continue Stretching: Copy these steps until the carpet has been stretched on all sides. Trim as necessary.
Step 9: Install Metal Strips: Finally, install metal strips to secure the newly stretched carpet in the doorways.
