A building in the US has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) silver certificate status, partly thanks to the inclusion of bamboo flooring.

The Western Illinois University has revealed its new Multicultural Centre has been built to such standards, with bamboo flooring being noted as being among "a number of recyclable materials" helping it to attain Leed status.

Construction material monitoring, a green roof, geothermal heating and cooling and fluorescent lighting were among the other elements contributing to the success.

Deputy director of facilities planning and construction Ted Renner said: "We're always shooting for Leed Silver Certification and we're so pleased to have achieved certification for [the] Multicultural Centre."

Bamboo is seen as green because it is a renewable material, with its harvesting not killing the plant and therefore ensuring a new crop will grow back ready to be cut again a few years hence.

Those looking for Bamboo flooring can choose from a selection of different products from Westhollow, which include floors with vertically or horizontally aligned slats, or strand-woven bamboo.
