Innovative rug is 'growing' in the right direction

A ‘living rug‘ is being marketed for homeowners who live in the city and may not have a garden outside their home or flat.

The rug follows the usual conventions of this type of flooring as it comes in a range of patterns and provides a comfortable feel underfoot.

The difference is that these rugs are simply soft pillows to begin with and as they are regularly fed and watered a layer of moss takes hold.

The seeds are pre-planted in the alpaca fibre rugs in intricate patterns in spiral patterns or, even more appropriately, flowers.

The designer came up with the idea after trying to create a way of combining city living with a natural space to nurture and she hopes to expand the idea further, possibly in to a full size carpet.

Creating the rugs can be time consuming and require a lot of effort as the seeds need to be stitched in to place correctly within the specific pattern.

Each rug costs approximately £1000 so they are certainly at the higher end of the price scale for this flooring and the effort required is certainly likely to put many buyers off.
