Natural carpets tipped as best for nursery
30th September 2009
The Ecologist magazine suggested that to keep the toxin levels at their lowest, householders should put down carpets made from natural fibres, such as coir, jute, wool or cotton.
Such floorings are better than synthetic materials such as nylon or polyester and parents should check they have not been treated with any toxic chemicals, the publication advised.
Another suggestion was to use wood, provided it has not been treated with any poisonous oils or waxes.
Wool carpets have been praised as a way to help create a sustainable floor.
Jennifer Parish of Go Green wrote in the Santa Cruz Sentinel that "Not only is it recyclable, but it's a natural, biodegradable product."
This is particularly so as it contains no petrochemicals, she noted.
