Old Mill floors become souvenirs
The flooring in an old mill is being recycled in an unusual way as the floorboards are being turned in to souvenir key rings so that part of the historic building can continue.
Each key ring is made from part of the original maple wood floors that the Dan River textile mill, in Danville, Virginia, featured.
The old mill was demolished after Dan River went in to liquidation in 2008 after almost 126 years of production in the textiles industry.
The mill held a place in many peoples’ hearts so Dan River Architectural Millworks started producing the key rings, as well as a range of furniture and plaques, and the authentic timber still carries a scent of cotton.
The concept is likely to be a popular one as consumers are turning to solid wood products during the recession because of the superior quality and maple is a very stylish timber.
A further benefit to this project is to prevent the hardwood flooring being scrapped – flooring recycling schemes are increasing in popularity as consumers take greater responsibility for the environment.
The maple timber which is now being used for other items is also likely to fit in with many décors with the current trend for light wood flooring.
