Recycled carpet 'the future'

Recycling carpet will be one of the major green flooring developments of the future, it has been predicted.

Such a comment was made in an article by Lynn Baker for Recycle.co.uk, noting some recent examples of how this has been done.

They include the removal of the carpets at the national hockey stadium in Milton Keynes - which is being demolished - with these being handed on to local sports clubs.

Another case she mentioned was the University of Wisconsin using second-hand carpets in a renovation of one of its facilities to help it bid for green building status.

She stated: "With landfill space at a premium, businesses are increasingly looking for ways to recycle or reuse old carpet and other types of flooring," adding that new ways of doing this have been developed that will help "point the way to the flooring of the future".

Another example of a recycling in carpet used this year was that of the green carpet - replacing the traditional red - being used at the 2009 Tokyo Film Festival, which had an eco-friendly theme.

To emphasise this, the carpet was made from old plastic bottles.
