Vinyl flooring goes for Olympic gold
Vinyl flooring maker Mannington Commercial is attempting an Olympian feat as it teams up with design firm 3M Canada to convert the latter company's vinyl graphics into flooring.

The project will see the 2,000 vinyl items currently hung up around Vancouver featuring symbols and images associated with the Winter Games being recycled after the event, Interiordesign.net reports.

Mannington will create floors suitable for commercial, educational and retail premises.

The vice president of 3M's display and graphics business Richard Chartrand remarked: "We learned about Mannington's precedent for recycling mixed waste similar to our graphic materials into flooring."

He added that while many companies would be put off by the challenge of recycling the "irregular-shaped lumps", Mannington has been "up for the challenge".

Other sporting events that have become associated with the making of vinyl flooring include football's World Cup.

The sport's governing body Fifa revealed before the draw for the finals in Cape Town last November that the city's International Convention Centre was having a 500 sq ft black reflective vinyl floor installed for the occasion.
