Warning to DIY installers

Warnings about unrealistic expectations have been issued to homeowners who watch design programmes on television and expect their own interiors to be renovated as easily and quickly.

A professional designer has warned consumers in a blog on FloorTalk that decorating in real life is often not as easy as it may seem on design programmes.

Transforming a home within a week would not be feasible for most homeowners, and even with the help of a team of experts it would be an unrealistic timescale.

In fact it is common for homeowners to choose to install their own flooring and rush through it because it looks so quick and easy on the television.

This can lead to disasters, especially when the installation involves carpet or solid wood flooring and the job is not done properly.

Subfloor checks are often not even considered and problems will certainly arise when individuals don’t use a Damp Proof Membrane to protect the floor from moisture.

Some flooring is certainly easier to install than others, including many styles of laminate flooring which use a click system installation method.

The advice to any DIY enthusiasts is to read manufacturer guidelines carefully and ensure all necessary checks and preparations are carried out, if you are unsure of anything be sure to seek advice.
