Afghan carpets displayed in House of Commons

Afghan carpets are among the items that have been showcased at the Palace of Westminster, a new report has found.

Details released about the use of the entertaining rooms in the House of Commons have revealed that the carpet display is among the uses that MPs have put them to, the Daily Express reports.

Published by the Commons Banqueting Office under freedom of information laws, the details also demonstrated that other events such as classic car shows took place.

While such use of parliamentary facilities may be the subject of controversy - as no commercial organisation is supposed to benefit from Commons receptions - the event may have been good news for the Afghan carpet industry.

Earlier this week, a representative of neighbouring Pakistan's carpet industry said the country can expect to make the equivalent of $200 million (£126 million) from its exports this year.

Chairman of the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association Pervaiz Hanif said the sector's overseas success is growing despite a lack of support from government bodies.
