Allergy sufferers can choose carpet

Hypoallergenic flooring has become increasingly important as allergies are more and more prevalent in contemporary society.

Carpets are generally the worst culprits for aggravating sensitivities, however new research has shown that this isn’t necessarily always the case.

Although carpets are known to trap dust and allergens, which can then irritate allergies, Mike Mills from Jordan’s Floors says that isn’t always the case.

"Carpet was tested against laminate and, with the average household cleaning pattern, the carpeted room actually had cleaner air." Said Mills.

For those allergy sufferers who do want to choose carpet for the home then the best option would be to choose a good quality 100% wool carpet.

It is also wise to select a carpet which does not have a thick pile as these products make it easier for dust and other irritants to be harboured in the carpet.

However, many consumers still look to wood flooring or hypoallergenic cork floors to combat allergy issues in the home as these options are still less likely to cause a flare up.

This is because it is easier to remove the allergens and associated dust from hard flooring than it is with fibres like carpet.
