Appeal over carpet industry
Nigerian carpet makers have appealed to the country's government to intervene to help the industry survive and grow.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria - which represents a number of makers of rugs and carpets - has issued a statement to the federal government, saying: "Do not allow the carpet industry to die," Vanguard reports.

It expressed concern that the number of manufacturers has dwindled from 25 in the 1980s and 1990s to just four now, a situation it blames on high tariffs and energy costs.

The president of the association Mohit Manglani said carpet makers have invested heavily in the industry and argued this should be recognised, along with the fact that carpets and oil are the country's only exports.

Mr Manglani is also head of the Nigerian Association of Carpet Manufacturers and last week this body pledged that it will continue to invest more in the country's manufacturing facilities for the floor coverings.
