A new yoga centre in the US city of Detroit is to open on March 1st, with a range of eco-friendly facilities including bamboo flooring.

Owners of Passage to Yoga stated that the floor has been installed alongside a number of recycled and renewable construction materials.

As well as this, the building features natural and energy-efficient lighting, a recycling station, soy carpets, an air filtration system and an absence of any paints containing volatile organic chemicals.

Director Matthew Darling said: "Passage to Yoga reflects my mission to unify the experience of yoga with the awareness of our environment and its needs."

The centre states that it is the only eco-friendly facility for the practice in the city of Detroit.

Bamboo is also being used to make homes greener in Oakland, California, ABC News reports.

Oakland Community Land Trust is inserting the material as part of a programme to make foreclosed homes it is acquiring more pleasant and eco-friendly places to live in.
