Bamboo flooring 'one of the best eco options'

Those looking to install an environmentally friendly floor would be doing just that if they opted for bamboo flooring, an expert has said.

Rachel Morgan of Canadian firm Cornwall Discount Carpet told the Montreal Gazette one factor that makes bamboo so green is that it grows eight times as fast as a redwood, along with the fact that harvesting does not kill the plant.

The article also noted that bamboo is harder than oak and can be made tougher still if it is strand bamboo, where the manufacturing process fuses fibres of the material together under high pressure.

Flooring designer Adrian Shewchuk told the news provider: "I have it installed throughout my house and it is the hardest wood floor I've ever had. My son and his friends haven't been able to put a single scratch in this floor."

Other benefits of bamboo were highlighted in a recent article on garden portal Helium.com, which noted that the material is available in various styles and shades, is easy to fit and deals well with changes in temperature and humidity because it comes from the tropics.
