Homeowners have been advised to carefully consider which type of underlay is best for them when installing new flooring.
The product can be made from a range of materials and each is suited to different situations, experts at the UK Flooring Direct Blog explained.
Underlay is often used for engineered, wood and laminate flooring and provides a number of advantages, including absorbing imperfections in the subfloor.
Sound and heat insulation can also be achieved through its installation, while a "soft feel" is experienced in some cases.
The experts suggested that underlay can come in a number of forms, including cork and standard foam, but added that consumers should "use only those that are approved by the manufacturer of the particular type of floor you are going to install".
Earlier this month, UK Flooring Direct blog authors recommended the use of Barrier Plus underlay for those who are hoping to soundproof rooms in their property.
