Carpet designer celebrates success

Delhi's only carpet designer has described how she has set about establishing the niche market for couture carpets across India.

In an interview with the Times of India marking World Women's Day, 26-year-old Rashi Bajaj explained that the 'Carpet Couture by Rashi' label is aimed at creating custom-designed carpets to meet the exact needs of the client.

Bringing the "concept of lifestyle carpets" to India is her aim, she said.

"This is the era of couture clothes, couture jewellery and couture furniture then why not Couture Carpets?" Ms Bajaj remarked.

Among the products the entrepreneur produces are carpets featuring religious icons, favourite flowers and designs tailored to special occasions such as weddings.

While Ms Bajaj serves the domestic market, India's carpet exports have been rising again after the end of the world recession, a government minister recently noted.

Speaking at the India Carpet Expo in Delhi last month, textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran noted that there was an 8.5 per cent rise in overseas trade in January.
