Carpet display gets grant for restoration
Azerbaijan has donated €1 million (£873,000) to help restore a collection of carpets that originated in the Islamic world.

The floor coverings are on display in the Louvre gallery in Paris, which is establishing an Islamic corner displaying art and artefacts associated with muslim countries.

According to the Azeri foreign ministry, the move is part of its permanent mission to the United Nations Education and Science Council (Unesco).

The country is one of a number of donors to the section in the gallery listed by French newspaper Le Figaro.

Azerbaijan recently applied to Unesco for its carpet-making industry to be included in the body's Non Material Cultural Heritage list, abc.az reported.

The Louvre's collection of carpets from the Islamic world includes a 16th century Iranian rug that depicts images of a number of animals.

It was made in the city of Kashan, which was famous for its silk carpets in the 16th and 17th centuries.
