Carpet industry revival blueprint unveiled

A blueprint has been drawn up for the revival of the Nepalese carpet industry.

The Ministry of Commerce and Supplies has produced a list of 16 project recommendations presented to the National Planning Commission (NPC), aimed at increasing the number of the flooring surfaces the country can export, the Himalayan Times reports.

Joint secretary of the ministry Surya Prasad Silwal commented: "All we need now is the
formation of a task force with representatives from NPC and other related sectors to
develop a strategy for sustainable economic growth."

Mr Silwal said one of the problems that has led to a major decline in overseas market share is the high rate of interest on export items, which is making the products less competitive.

Recently, Kathmandu-based manufacturer Nepal Rugs and Carpets signed a deal with distribution firm Lisa Delivery Services to improve its customer services for those buying its products in Florida, Furniture Today reported.
