The UK carpet industry is looking to improve its record when it comes to recycling.
In an effort to reduce the amount of carpet that ends up in landfills and increase the amount that ends up back on floors, the industry has drawn up a new national action plan, recycle.co.uk reports.
The portal noted that at present, only two per cent of UK carpets are re-used and trade organisation Carpet Recycling UK has devised the programme to change this situation with a new collection system.
Among the features of this are a system to identify what most carpet waste is composed of and centralised locations for floor recycling services to make it easier to collect old carpet.
An increase in carpet recycling is one of the ways in which one US state has recently managed to raise the level of recycled household waste.
The Washington Department of Ecology revealed earlier this month that there was a six per cent reduction in landfill waste from households in 2008.
