Carpet maker hails durability

A US carpet manufacturer has reported the results of tests on its carpets, noting that the methods adopted in the manufacturing process have led to the products being more environmentally-friendly than other such floor coverings.

Georgia-based INVISTA said its Stainmaster carpets and its products made from Antron fibre produce 40 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than most carpets in terms of their production processes and in relation to their life cycle.

The results came from life cycle analysis (LCA) tests by Boustead Consulting & Associates, explained global sustainability director for INVISTA's Performance Surfaces and Materials business Bobby Berrier.

He said: "INVISTA commissioned the LCAs and combined the results with carpet performance data because we feel this helps our customers better understand the environmental benefits of our products."

Eco-friendly carpeting was a central feature of the Tokyo Film Festival last week.

The vent, which had an ecological theme, saw the red carpet replaced with one that was green both in colour and constitution, having been made from recycled plastic drinks bottles.
