Carpet making bid for UNESCO status
A style of carpet-making practiced in one region of Iran has been the subject of a bid to add it to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The Fars region style of carpet weaving has been put forward for inclusion by the Fars cultural heritage, tourism and handicrafts department, the Tehran Times reports.

A collection of 120 photographs showing the weavers of the region in action has been supplied to UNESCO, which will meet on January 20th to decide on possible additions to its list.

The paper noted that the history of such weaving dates back to the eighth century BC, when carpets were used along with silver and gold as currency in trading, although its heyday came in the 13th century AD.

Last week, the same paper related a report from the Mehr News Agency that Iran Customs Administration figures had shown carpet exports to be up on 2008.
