New evidence of the green potential of carpet may have been demonstrated by the recycling of the material into plastic devices.

Recycling specialist Axion has joined forces with Carpet Recycling UK in a study to establish what sort of new items can be created by recycling synthetic carpets, European Plastics News reports.

It found that items such as plant pots, compost bins and buckets could be made this way using injection moulding.

Axion director Roger Morton said that carpet recycling in Britain is at an early stage of development.

"So this successful study shows exciting potential and promise for material recovery from a difficult and largely-ignored waste stream," he added.

Wool carpet material can also be recycled, it was revealed this week.

Lake District-based insulation maker Second Nature has been turning left over carpet wool from UK factories into an organic insulating product called Edenbloc.

The development was partly funded with a £10,000 grant from the Lake District Sustainable Development Fund.
