Carpetright pledge to victims of riots

It seemed as though things were going badly for Carpetright when the company had to announce cutbacks but now the Tottenham riots have caused further problems for the firm.

However the chairman of the UK flooring business is determined that these setbacks will not define the company.

Instead Lord Harris, chairman of the family business since 1957, has pledged to help those who were living in the looted building.

The Tottenham store was based in an historic building along with several flats, which were destroyed by rioters, leaving many people homeless.

Lord Harris has offered to help the homeless with cash or clothing donations as they are unlikely to have been able to take many belongings when fleeing the building.

The UK carpet store has suffered a similar fate to many other high street retailers with financial difficulties and the riots in cities across the UK will only make matters worse.

Lord Harris said he found it difficult to understand the actions of the rioters saying: ‘That’s not protesting, that’s thieving.’
