The firm partnered with hotel firm La Quinta Inns & Suites in Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida to pick up old carpets being discarded during renovations and have these recycled, Floor Covering Weekly reports.
Used carpet material has been passed on to Shaw Industries' Evergreen Nylon Recycling Centre in Georgia, where the materials have been broken down into the building blocks of nylon carpet in order to be recycled.
Shaw Industries was recently given two awards by Floor Covering Weekly for its environmental initiatives.
The firm was commended for its overall environmental efforts and specifically for the work of the recycling plant, which is based in the town of Augusta.
Other winners included Mohawk Industries, which has switched from producing petroleum flooring product to bio-based ones.
