Those laying a carpet over a concrete subfloor may wish to invest in the Barrier Plus carpet underlay from UK Flooring Direct.
A concrete subfloor is prone to allowing moisture to seep through and this can lead to any exposed floor suffering damage from the resulting damp.
The Barrier Plus has a damp-proof membrane built into it to prevent this happening, as well as a 3mm-thick polyfoam layer that insulates against heat loss and is also an effective sound barrier.
It is one of several underlays on offer and others include the Tuplex Wood Laminate Underlay, which also has a moisture barrier but of a kind particularly suited to engineered floors with underfloor heating.
This is because it has a structure that holds moisture while allowing warm air to pass through to the room above.
Moisture barriers are less likely to be required if the subfloor is made of wood.
