Continuity in flooring 'gives sense of spaciousness'

Flooring is an important consideration when decorating a small home, an expert has noted.

Interior designer Anna Riopelle told Canwest News Service that making the right choice can help the space seem larger than it is.

She was offering tips for those who may be downsizing to an apartment from a large house, as well as young, first-time buyers moving into their first property.

According to Ms Riopelle, using a variety of materials should be avoided.

This is because it will create visual stops and starts and she recommended going for continuity in order to give the impression of spaciousness.

Other advice included minimising clutter by having only a small number of items on display and putting others into storage.

The Associated Press recently observed that new flooring can add excitement and glamour to a room - despite often being overlooked - with vintage hardwood among the fashionable choices at present.
