A home in Canada has been equipped with cork bathroom flooring as part of a major green building project.

In addition to the bathroom, the rest of the house has also been fitted with the same material, the Vancouver Sun reports.

Built at the Sun Rivers development in the town of Kamloops, the project to create a dream green home was a collaboration of several interested parties, with the vice-president of contractors Nextbuild Gavin Rasmussen explaining to the paper why the substance was picked.

He said: "The flooring is all cork flooring - which is a renewable resource because you peel the cork off the tree but the tree keeps growing."

Other green aspects of the dwelling included solar panels, a humidity balancing system and extra insulation.

Cork was also suggested as a top choice for a green home by building industry experts in a feature on the subject this week by the Virginian-Pilot.
