Cork flooring a feature of futuristic classroom
23rd March 2010
Students at Washington County Technical High School in Maryland set about designing the ideal classroom for the future and the green flooring was just one of many eco-friendly elements suggested, the Herald-Mail reports.
Other items would include renewable energy devices and a wall covered in grass - which would provide extra insulation and contain rainwater runoff - while an alternative proposal for the insulation was to use recycled denim.
The designs were praised by Washington County administrator Gregory Murray in an awards ceremony at the school.
He said: "We think this is the first school in the nation for students to design and students to construct classroom portables with photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal heating."
Other green buildings with cork flooring include the CityFlats Hotel in Holland, Michigan, the Holland Sentinel noted last week.
