A businessman's eco-friendly home has cork flooring, it has been noted.
The basement surface is in the residence of winner of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce's 2009 Environmental Achievement Award Shawn Williamson, newsdurhamregion.com reports.
It stated that cork flooring is both a sustainable material and one that lasts a long time.
He has also ensured that the family home uses roof beams sourced from recycled wood and composts food waste instead of putting it in the bin.
Mr Williamson, who runs green solutions firm the Balleen Group, was praised by Durham Region tourism manager Kerri King, who said: "What's great about Shawn is that he really lives it."
The Balleen group is a firm aimed at helping companies to be green in affordable ways.
In a similar case, boss of green products maker Serious Materials Marc Porat told Palo Alto Online how he used cork flooring as part of his mission to make his 1930s home a zero-energy residence.
