Cork flooring is a feature of a kitchen that has been given a complete makeover after the owner described how she "hated" it.

US-based newspaper the Grand Island Independent described how the new flooring became a feature of Kristen Bishop's new home.

"Now I love my kitchen", she said, with the cork floors being joined by other new features such as cupboard lighting, quartz counter tops and a new sink with the dishwasher moved nearer.

So happy is she with it that this Sunday (September 19th), Ms Bishop's kitchen will be open from 13:00 to 17:00 local time, with visitors paying an entry fee that will go towards a local charity.

It will be one of 11 tours of kitchens in the area, of which others may also have cork flooring.

Earlier this month, an article in the Calgary Herald noted cork is becoming increasingly popular in Canadian homes, quoting floor salesman Richard Hough as noting the ability of the material to withstand impacts from items that would dent or scratch other kinds of flooring.
