Cork flooring a part of popular green apartments
Cork flooring is one of the features of a development of apartments in the US that has already been filled before anyone can move in.

The Akwesasne Housing Authority in the St Regis Mohawk Reservation of upstate New York has yet to construct the 20 units for handicapped and elderly residents at the Sunrise Acres Elderly Complex, which will be doubled in size by the development, the Watertown Daily Times reports.

Yet despite this, a waiting list greater than the number of new residences set to be constructed in the $7 million (£4.5 million) project has already been established.

Eco-friendly elements of the homes include not just cork flooring, but also natural lighting, solar panels and geothermal heating.

The executive director of the housing authority Retha Herne said: "We've been looking into green building technology for a few years and I decided it was time to start doing it."

Another green building to feature cork is the new Oxford Hotel in the city of Bend, Oregon.

The building also contains recycled materials, uses renewable energy and has organic soap, the Bend Bulletin reported this week.
