Cork flooring is one of the materials that has been credited with making a hospice in the US a comfortable and peaceful place to be.
The Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, Massachusetts, has the flooring among a number of elements aimed at making the place a "gracious dwelling for this one last moment", the Gloucester Times reports.
Speaking of the burnished cork floor, it notes the softness and give that the material has, commenting that it is "as if to say we will do our best to make nothing hard here that doesn't have to be".
The cork flooring is included alongside elements such as a stone fire place, wood panelled walls, modern lighting and furniture, all of which are aimed at providing a hint of opulence and comfort, the paper notes.
Cork's organic nature is another reason for its popularity with some, such as the Acorn Organic Salon in New Hampshire.
The hair and beauty outlet chose the material as a means of moving towards its twin goals of making both its products and premises greener, Sea Coast Online reported earlier this month.
