Museums across the United States are showcasing eco-homes among their exhibits, including cork flooring, it has been revealed.

In a feature on the trend, USA today noted the existence of such model homes in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Ohio case, based in the city of Dayton, has cork flooring and is a miniature green home, designed for children to explore and to learn about how to be greener.

It also includes features like rainwater conservation, composting, low energy light bulbs and wind energy, with youngsters being able to crank up a windmill to see this power generation in action.

The use of cork as a sustainable flooring in eco-friendly buildings has been copied in many cases.

One recent example was that of a home sold by an eco-conscious couple in 2006 in Boulder, Colarado, reported on by the Daily Camera.

Marge and Russell McLellan's former home has cork flooring alongside solar panels and other green items, aspects that its new owners have kept ever since.
