Cork flooring part of new green building

The eco-friendly features of cork flooring have led to it being chosen to be part of a new government building in the US.

It was used in a green structure being constructed to house local government and administration functions in the city of Green, Ohio, the suburbanite.com reports.

The floors use cork due to its renewable nature and this material has been implemented alongside other eco-friendly features such as low-flow toilets, automatic lights and adhesives containing low levels of volatile organic compounds.

In all, the building cost €9.6 million (£6 million) and will house 40 employees from the city authority and 14 from the local school district.

Cork is a great material to use in creating a sustainable kitchen, it has been stated this week.

Owner of US-based sustainable architecture company Amicus Green Building Centre Jason Holstine told Earth911.com this lies in its sustainable nature, since the material consists of stripped bark from a tree that grows back, rather than lumber that has been chopped down.
