Cork flooring tip for sustainable kitchens

Cork flooring is one of the best ways to make a kitchen eco-friendly, an expert has said.

Owner of US-based sustainable architecture company Amicus Green Building Centre Jason Holstine stated that the material is particularly good because it can be obtained by stripping bark rather than cutting trees down, Earth 911.com reports.

He also recommended ways of ensuring other flooring surfaces are green too.

Recycled wood is one good material, Mr Holstine suggested, although it should be sourced domestically and not from overseas to save on carbon footprints.

He also suggested bamboo is reliable, "but only if it is made well by an experienced manufacturer using quality stalks, adhesives and milling equipment".

Natural linoleum is also good because it has low levels of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds, the expert noted.

Cork's use as a sustainable flooring material has helped prevent the trees from dying after the farming of the bark for use in bottle corkage dwindled, co-founder of the Green Living Centre Adam Lutsky recently told Westport News.
