Cork 'performs very well as flooring'

The performance of cork as a flooring material has been hailed in an article on uses for the substance.

Writing about ways the cork can be harnessed instead of its traditional - but declining - role as a wine bottle stopper, Triple Pundit commentator Leon Kaye said that in his household the installation of cork floor tiles has worked very well.

He observed: "Intuitively, one would think cork tiles would lack the durability of wood or tile, but several years later, it looks new and holds up well, even when spiked high heels stomp on it."

Mr Kaye said it is important to keep the cork industry going, as its environmental benefits include the fact that the presence of cork trees in Mediterranean areas helps prevent drought by holding the soil together and thus preventing erosion.

Earlier this month, green expert Sarah Lonsdale wrote in the Daily Telegraph that cork flooring is a very good insulator, which helps improve home energy efficiency.
