Expert explains how hardwood flooring can hit top green level

An expert has explained that there are three ways in which hardwood flooring can reach the US LEED standard for environmentally-friendly buildings.

Responding to a query on the subject, Sarah Gudeman of Green-buildings.com said one major contributory factor to reaching such status would be the material being recovered and manufactured within 500 miles of where it is used.

Salvaged or reused materials could also contribute points and a further way of gaining credits would be if the wood was the by-product of industrial and manufacturing processes and was being reused rather than discarded, she added.

The questioner had stated that the floor they were using was a recycled one held together with a non-toxic glue.

Utilising new technology in innovative ways is the key to success in the hardwood manufacturing business, the boss of one Canadian maker has said.

Kultur Hardwood Flooring president Joseph Kember told the National Post that this, tight financial planning and a "family-orientated" approach were the elements that contributed to the success of the enterprise and its listing as one of Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies.
