A rug belonging to former president George W Bush has not been destroyed, the White House has said.

The old item was removed from the Oval Office this month, with President Obama bringing in a new one as part of a move to redecorate the room in his own preferred style.

However, White House assistant press secretary Josh Earnest insisted that the now redundant Bush rug has not been thrown away, CNN reports.

He was clarifying the fact in response to a newspaper report, commenting: "As you would expect, President Bush's Oval Office rug is intact and is the responsibility of the curator."

It is customary for every new president to introduce their own rugs and carpets to the West Wing, with the old ones heading to the library after their terms in office end.

President Obama's new Oval Office carpet caused a stir recently when it was revealed to have a quote attributed to Martin Luther King around its perimeter.

However, it was then revealed the phrase was actually spoken by 19th century anti-slavery campaigner Theodore Parker.
