Further carbon reduction funding announced

Nearly £9 million of further funding is to be provided to reduce the carbon emissions of homes in the UK.

The Homes and Communities Agency is partnering with the Department of Energy and Climate Change and Communities and Local Government in order to make the money available for a range of initiatives.

Housing minister John Healey explained that homes represent a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions and the investment is necessary to make them more environmentally-friendly.

"By making all new homes zero carbon from 2016 we are already leading the way to a much greener housing stock and lower energy bills for residents," he added.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, recently suggested that construction of new homes needs to increase - with government action necessary to meet ensure demand is met.

It came after Communities and Local Government found that completions were up 24 per cent in the three months to June, compared to the previous quarter.
