Further increase in home building needed, says expert

Government figures showing an increase in the number of new housing starts hide the fact that building needs to increase significantly.

That is the opinion of Federation of Master Builders director of external affairs Brian Berry, who suggested that more must be done to meet demand in the UK.

Last week, Communities and Local Government revealed that work began on 63 per cent more homes in England in the three months up to the end of June than in the previous quarter.

Completions were also up 24 per cent, but Mr Berry highlighted the fact that statistics are still below 2008's levels.

"Demand for new housing is still going up and up because of household formation and increase in population," he said. "We've got to think about how we're going to increase the supply of housing."

Mr Berry noted that government targets call for 240,000 new homes to be constructed annually, but argued that only half that number are likely to be built.
