Government in insulated flooring pledge

Government in insulated flooring pledge

The government has pledged to introduce new measures to make it a legal requirement for homes to be zero carbon by 2016.

Housing minister John Healey revealed that as well as this meaning that new buildings will have to be constructed differently, there will be major changes to existing homes, with requirements that more insulation be added to them.

This will include having insulated floors, as well as more being done to avoid heat loss through walls, ceilings and windows.

Mr Healey pledged an extra £3.2 million into long-term research on how this can be brought about, something that may impact on the future of flooring as new ways of retaining heat are explored.

Earlier this month, Janette Seney told the Argus Leader that hardwood flooring is a very good insulator.

At the same time, she noted that for a surface that feels warm to the feet, cork flooring is better.

Another option she suggested was to cover the hardwood surface with carpets and rugs.
