Hardwood floors are an attractive and increasingly popular choice for homeowners, but the right sort should be installed, an expert has said.

Speaking to CBS.com, founder of interiors experts Angie's List, Angie Hicks said that this choice is important.

She explained that solid hardwoods are "beautiful," but are not always the most appropriate item to install, stating: "Engineered hardwoods are more important to be used on slabs, or below grade flooring where there is more humidity and there's a chance that the floor might expand and contract."

Ms Hicks went on to advise that the installation should always be carried out by professionals, while also telling those who have them that keeping abrasive dust off and avoiding exposure to discolouring direct sunlight are important means of preserving such floors.

San Francisco-based interior designers Denna McLaughlin and Celeste Le Sage-Gish told the San Francisco Chronicle this week that wood can be a green choice, but this depends not just on it coming from a sustainable forest.

Local sourcing is also important to keep the carbon footprint down, Ms McClaughlin noted.
