Hardwood flooring choice 'depends on surface below'

Hardwood flooring is a great choice for homes, but the best type to use may depend on the surface below, an expert has said.

Chris Goff of US-based firm Mainstyle Flooring said that some places will suit engineered flooring and some fit hardwood better, Wish TV8.com reported.

He stated: "I would say you wouldn't want to put solid hardwood flooring on a concrete floor in a basement. You know engineered flooring is great for that, going below grade or on concrete."

The engineered kind takes several thinner pieces of hardwood and stacks them on top of each other, meaning it does not expand and contract in the way a solid piece would.

Water, waxes and detergents should be avoided to help keep a hardwood floor in its best condition, Mr Goff noted.

Engineered wooden flooring is a feature of two penthouses overlooking Fistral Beach in Cornwall described by Country Life this week as "absolutely stunning".

These come with thermostatic-controlled underfloor heating, the magazine noted.
