Hardwood flooring firm expands production

A US hardwood flooring firm is taking on more staff and increasing production after successfully making the transition from providing floors for new build homes to creating them for existing residences.

The shift in its product base has enabled Johnson-based Mullican Flooring to ride out the storm as the US housing market has slumped, with the company now looking to open a new plant, Johnson City Express reports.

It is increasing capacity by 50 per cent in doing so, with 25 people expected to be added to the current staff of 135 and the eventual total of new jobs set to rise to 75.

Noting that the housing market started to decline in some parts of the US as early as 2004, chief executive Neil Poland said of the company's insight: "It's obviously a combination of being lucky and smart."

One very large existing home having a hardwood floor installed recently was not one of the residential kind.

The Cowboys Stadium, which hosts American football team the Dallas Cowboys, recently had a hardwood floor fitted in jigsaw fashion to enable the venue to host its first-ever basketball game.
