The capacity of hardwood flooring to be recycled has been emphasised in a blog by a householder whose entire home is being taken apart before he replaces it.

Writing for USA Today, Wendy Koch described the process by which her small house in Falls Church, Virginia is being taken apart and its parts - including the hardwood flooring - getting re-sold.

She observed: "Some salvaged materials are sold at auctions, enabling thrifty shoppers to buy solid hardwood floors - for example - for less than $1 (68p) per square foot."

Ms Koch said the process may be slower than straightforward demolition, but would ensure that 85 per cent of the existing material can be re-used.

Another home in the US that has been auctioning off its old hardwood floors is the governor's residence in Tennessee.

The mansion in the state capital Nashville has been undergoing renovation and the flooring was among the 100 or so items being sold eBay style, it was revealed last month.
