Home improvements 'about personalisation'

Most people who carry out home improvements now do so to make their homes suit their own tastes, not as a preparation for selling it, an expert has said.

Editor at House Beautiful magazine Julia Goodwin commented that the days of "painting everything beige" to impress estate agents have "long gone" as the recent slump in the property market has meant that people are adjusting to the prospect of staying put in the long term.

"We will decorate the sitting room in the way that we would like to [and] that appeals to us rather than would appeal to a prospective purchaser'," she stated, noting that eco-friendly elements may be a prominent element.

This could include sustainable flooring materials, such as cork flooring.

An example of cork flooring being part of a green home is on display in a Holiday Tea and Home Tour in the US.

The event, hosted as a fundraiser by a local church, will include a house with cork flooring and various green elements being open to the public to view, Chippewa.com reported recently.
